My oldest was quite indignant one day when he overheard my youngest going thru the lesson for the day: "Mom! WHY didn't you use this when we were little?! This is so much easier to understand than what we had to do!
I highly recommend starting with Level A if your child is not a fluent reader or Level B even if your child is a fluent reader. The levels don't correspond to grade levels but rather level of difficulty. Experience has taught me that it's better to start off with an easy level and work up to the harder stuff, rather than starting with something too hard and having to backtrack.
You can always do two lessons per day if your child finds most of it easy. There is so much meat at the first two levels, you don't want to skip it.
I only wish I had Eclectic Foundations 12 years ago! Level B For this level, you will need the teacher's guide, student workbook, word cards and appendixes, and the McGuffey's Revised First Eclectic Reader.
First Four Weeks. Scope and Sequence. Phonics Practice Sheets and Word Cards. Word Mastery This level continues to teach reading with Mrs. Phonics practice has two parts word cards practice and review and spelling dictated words. The Word Cards for each level are printed ten to a page to be cut apart. The words are outline letters, with the intent that the student will be coloring in the cards.
The Phonics Practice Sheets are laminated pages in a spiral-bound book providing a write-on, wipe-off experience. Obviously, the pages can be re-used. Poetry is covered, with comprehension review. Grammar is covered with a teacher-student dialogue scripted providing examples and definitions as well as practice worksheets. Supplies needed for all grades are minimal pencils, crayons, scissors, map colors colored pencils , plus thin and regular dry-erase markers and a box for word cards.
There are, however, a few particulars for specific grades listed below. The Student Workbooks are practical, spiral-bound collections of lesson worksheets, with lined portions for handwriting practice, word lists from the lessons, and varied, short grammar exercises. Some picture studies and poetry are included. Sadly, it appears that many children don't know very many of these beloved rhymes anymore. It seems only natural to include Mother Goose in this program.
Each lesson concludes with a different Mother Goose rhyme. Biblical Approach: This curriculum will not replace your current Bible curriculum but will encourage a Biblical worldview. Cute little poems base on Biblical principles have been written for the letter search. The McGuffey stories are well known for their reverence of God and promoting high moral standards and patriotism. Teacher Friendly: This program is designed to cover four days a week for weeks. Teacher Friendly:. This program is designed to cover four days a week for weeks. It really is an open-and-go program! There is no prep work involved. Everything is laid out for you so you can focus your time on teaching and bonding with your children. It makes choosing curriculum a challenge.
A friend told me about Eclectic Foundations. It sounded great, so I decided to give it a try. The first thing I noticed was that the pages were not cluttered with irrelevant information or pictures. These can be very distracting to a child with special needs. Next, the print is large and crisp, which helps her to see it better.
The games make it a lot of fun to learn and because they are played over and over with different letters, she knows how to play them now. She can even do some of her work completely on her own! I am also using it with my son.
He has been so excited to be able to read some words early on in the book. It has encouraged him in his work. Since I am homeschooling 6 children, I appreciate that there is not a lot of planning that has to be done ahead of time and the needed resources are free or at a very minimum cost.
I was becoming discouraged until I found Eclectic Foundations. This carefully crafted program not only introduced my children to the parts of language with a fun color-coordinated approach but my children thrived in their new-found knowledge of grammar. It was exciting to see their expressions of joy as they learned through this intriguing approach. Poetry is covered, with comprehension review.
